Most digital marketing strategies focus on familiar territory.
Firms invest in search engine optimization, publish blog content, run advertising campaigns, and maintain a presence on social media platforms—all of which are important pieces of a modern digital marketing toolkit.
But some of the most valuable conversations that relate to your services are happening somewhere else entirely.
They’re happening in online communities where people ask questions, share experiences, and look for advice from strangers who might have been through the same situation.
Platforms like Reddit host millions of these conversations every day, but how do you find the ones pertinent to you? Manually monitoring dozens of communities might be possible, but it’s rarely practical. Even a dedicated marketing team would struggle to keep up with the volume of new posts appearing every hour.
That realization led us to ask a different question: what if technology could help find those opportunities and conversations automatically?
LaFleur recently developed a custom tool designed to help solve that problem.
The Challenge: Finding Relevant Conversations in Real Time
Online communities host enormous volumes of activity. At any given moment, thousands of new posts appear across hundreds of communities. Those posts might relate to legal issues, personal experiences, and professional advice.
Some of these conversations may have nothing to do with a firm’s services. But some of them absolutely do.
Someone might ask a question about a legal problem they’re facing. Another user might share a story about a difficult situation and wonder what options are available. Others might ask for recommendations or advice.
These discussions can represent meaningful opportunities to contribute expertise. The difficulty lies in discovering them before the conversation moves on, which can happen fast.
The Idea: A Reddit Opportunity Monitoring Tool
To solve this problem, we worked with one of our clients to create a new “Reddit bot” tool. This bot automatically monitors relevant discussions across Reddit communities to identify potential opportunities.
It’s important to note that the bot doesn’t post. We have no interest in filling organic, user-driven Reddit communities with AI-generated content. Rather than automatically posting responses, the system simply identifies potential opportunities and alerts the client’s marketing team.
A user of this bot begins by selecting which subreddits they want the system to monitor. These communities might include forums where discussions related to a firm’s practice areas frequently occur.
From there, the bot checks those communities regularly. In the version used for this case study, the monitoring process runs once every hour through an automated background process.
Each new post is analyzed using a scoring system designed to identify conversations that may be relevant. If a post exceeds a predefined threshold in the scoring system (say, a seven out of 10), the bot sends an email notification to designated team members.

What the Tool Sends to the Team
Each notification provides enough information for the team to quickly evaluate whether the opportunity is worth pursuing.
The information delivered by the bot includes:
- A link to the Reddit post
- A short explanation of why the post appears relevant
- A suggested response that could contribute to the discussion
- A way to mark the opportunity as reviewed
- Access to previously reviewed posts
From this point, all engagement with a user happens manually. The firm’s team reviews the post, evaluates the context of the discussion, and decides whether a thoughtful response would be appropriate.
That human review step is essential. Online communities tend to reject automated or overly promotional messaging. And besides, no one joins a community like Reddit to get harassed by chatbots or exposed to sales pitches. Only when a person from the firm feels like they can realistically provide help and benefit to someone will they reach out to a user.

Early Results from the Reddit Monitoring Tool
The monitoring tool is still relatively new, but the early signals have been promising.
In its first phase of use, the system identified well over 100 posts that appeared relevant to the firm’s services across targeted communities. These posts occurred in communities where professional participation is allowed as long as responses remain helpful, transparent, and respectful of community guidelines.
The strategy of how to deliver responses is still evolving, but the monitoring system has already demonstrated something important: meaningful engagement opportunities exist in these communities. But without the right tools, they’ll be extremely difficult to find.
Why This Matters for Marketing Strategy
The experience with the Reddit bot so far highlights an important shift in how digital marketing strategies are evolving. Traditional marketing strategies often focus on publishing content and waiting for potential clients to arrive.
But today, many valuable conversations are happening elsewhere: across community platforms, discussion forums, and social spaces where people are already asking questions.
Participating in those conversations can create visibility, credibility, and trust. The challenge is identifying the right moments to engage.
Tools like this Reddit monitoring bot help solve that problem by finding opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
A Different Way to Think About Marketing
The Reddit bot example also raises some broader strategic questions:
- What systems are you building to support your marketing strategy for the future?
- Your competitors are probably also using traditional digital marketing strategies, so what have you explored that falls outside the usual boxes?
- Are you constantly re-evaluating your assessment of what’s possible using the latest tools and automations?
Many agencies focus primarily on managing campaigns or producing content. But modern marketing increasingly involves building tools that help firms identify opportunities and act on them quickly.
Automation, APIs, and data analysis tools now make it possible to develop systems that support marketing strategies in ways that weren’t feasible just a few years ago. Monitoring online conversations is just one example.
Innovative digital tools and automation can help firms:
- Identify emerging questions related to their services
- Track conversations across multiple online communities
- Highlight opportunities to contribute expertise in real time
In many cases, the biggest barrier isn’t the technology. It’s simply recognizing that these opportunities exist and taking the initiative to capitalize on them.

Where Marketing Strategy Is Headed
The takeaway from this case study isn’t that every firm needs a Reddit monitoring tool (although it might be worth considering). The larger lesson is that marketing strategies are expanding beyond traditional channels.
The most effective approaches increasingly combine:
- On-site marketing efforts such as SEO and content development
- Off-site engagement strategies in communities where conversations are already happening
- Custom tools and automation that help teams identify opportunities faster
When those pieces work together, firms gain the ability to participate in conversations that were previously impossible to track.
Forward-thinking marketing agencies aren’t just running traditional campaigns anymore. They’re building the tools and systems that make new kinds of strategies possible.
If your current marketing team or agency isn’t thinking about or building custom tools like this, it’s fair to ask whether they’re still meeting your needs in a fast-evolving field.
