If you need a brief case study in non-traditional career paths, Richard can supply one. After graduating with a degree in broadcasting from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in 2005, Richard worked in public television and radio before he pursued his love of music to work as a DJ. By leveraging social media and building relationships in the nightlife industry across the Midwest, he created his own small business.

When the Great Recession shuttered many of the clients Richard was working with, he decided it was time to pivot and find some stability for his budding family. He took a role with a large national insurance company, eager to learn what a corporate gig could offer. After a few years working his way through the company while still running his DJ business, Richard decided it was time for a new challenge. He completed a master’s degree program in communications from his alma mater and then spent time as a professor in GVSU’s School of Communications.

Next, Richard worked as an advisor for middle-market clients at a well-established risk management firm. Here, he learned that any business in our increasingly internet-focused economy needs digital marketing to grow. Conversations with Chip and Falon from the LaFleur leadership team convinced Richard to bring his passion for client advocacy and relationship building to LaFleur in 2020.

Outside of work, Richard continues to play and collect music in his free time. He is married to one of the most patient and forgiving wives a husband could ask for. He’s the father of a rambunctious son that keeps everyone equal parts smiling and exhausted, and he has a dog that looks like the love child of Falkor (from The Neverending Story) and a mogwai (from Gremlins).
